Guides: EU product identifiers for sellers outside the EU

Written from the point of view of someone holding a Shopify export, not a customs lawyer. Each guide is short and ends with a concrete next step.

Manufacturer identifier in Shopify

Shopify product exports have no column made for the manufacturer's or supplier's product code (NS-PID). Here is what EU customs means by it, what to collect, and where to keep it in Shopify.

Parcel held: missing identifier

From 1 November 2026 a customs declaration for a consumer parcel may be rejected or the goods held if it lacks the required product identifiers. A checklist for sellers: what was missing, how to supply it, and how to stop it happening again.

M-PID, NS-PID, S-PID

Plain-language explanation of the three EU product identifiers — merchant, non-standardised manufacturer, standardised manufacturer — and the Y081 code, with examples.

Supplier request template

Copy-paste email and spreadsheet layout to request manufacturer model numbers and barcodes from suppliers so your EU shipments carry the required product identifiers.

Carrier PID fields

How express carriers collect the EU product identifiers (merchant code, manufacturer code, barcode): commercial invoice line items and shipping platform item fields.

Etsy, eBay, WooCommerce, Shopify

What sellers on each platform can already supply for the EU product identifier requirement, what is missing, and how to fill the gaps before 1 November 2026.

Deadline 1 Nov 2026

Timeline of the EU product identifier requirement (voluntary 1 July 2026, mandatory 1 November 2026), what happens after the deadline, and a week-by-week preparation plan.

Barcode errors in Shopify

The barcode problems that show up in real Shopify exports — wrong length, bad check digit, N/A placeholders, apostrophes from spreadsheets, one barcode on several products — and how to fix each.

Y081 explained

Y081 is the code a declarant enters to state that no standardised product identifier (GTIN/EAN/UPC) exists for an item. It does not replace the merchant or manufacturer code.

C127 / C128 / C129 codes

Reference table for the EU customs document codes used for product identifiers on consumer-parcel declarations (H1, H6, H7): C127 merchant code, C128 manufacturer code, C129 standardised barcode, Y081 no barcode.

€3 duty vs identifiers

Two different EU changes for consumer parcels in 2026: a flat EUR 3 customs duty per item on low-value imports (from 1 July 2026) and mandatory product identifiers on declarations (from 1 November 2026). What each means for a Shopify seller.

Does it apply to me?

Five questions to decide whether the EU product identifier requirement (M-PID, NS-PID, S-PID from 1 November 2026) applies to your shipments: where you ship from, who buys, how you sell, who declares, and marketplace vs own store.

Metafield for maker's code

Where to keep the manufacturer or supplier product code (NS-PID) in Shopify: a variant metafield or a side sheet, and what does and does not appear in your product CSV export.

GTIN check digit

The check-digit formula for GTIN-8, UPC-A (12), EAN-13 and GTIN-14 with a worked example, plus the errors that make a barcode invalid on EU customs data.

CSV column template

A copy-ready column layout for collecting the three EU product identifiers per variant, with a downloadable CSV template, status values and source notes that carriers and the TITANTH checker can read.

IOSS, EORI, HS vs PID

Plain comparison of the codes an EU-bound parcel needs: IOSS number (VAT), EORI (trader ID), HS code (tariff classification) and the three product identifiers (per-item identity), so you know which you already have and which you still need.

Supplier only has a barcode

The Commission guidance allows a manufacturer or supplier to use the standardised barcode (S-PID) as its non-standardised identifier (NS-PID). What to record, what to ask, and when a barcode is not enough.

Handmade: tolerance list

The Commission guidance grants an administrative tolerance for specific hand-made and artisanal goods, unprocessed agricultural goods and antiques: the conventional values "M-PID" and "NS-PID" satisfy the requirement. The list of commodity codes, and what everyone else must do.

POD, personalised, second-hand

The Commission guidance says customised, personalised, print-on-demand, second-hand and refurbished goods get no special treatment: declare the product identifiers of the underlying or original product. Examples for POD apparel, engraved gifts and resold items.

Dropshipping: supplier code

Dropshippers must still supply merchant, manufacturer and barcode identifiers for EU consumer parcels from 1 November 2026. Where to get the supplier or factory code, what a listing ID is not, and how to store it per variant.

Same SKU for both?

Only when you are the manufacturer or producer of the goods. For resold products the manufacturer identifier must be the maker's or supplier's code. What the guidance says and how to record it.

New customs code (2026/2108)

Regulation (EU) 2026/2108, the new Union Customs Code, was published on 19 September 2026. Most of it applies from 21 September 2027; a per-item Union handling fee on distance-sale goods starts once its amount is set (Parliament: at the latest 1 November 2026); the EU Customs Data Hub takes over e-commerce data from 1 July 2028. The product identifier date, 1 November 2026, does not move.
