Print-on-demand, personalised and second-hand goods

Short answer: Declare the identifiers of the underlying product. A printed T-shirt uses the blank shirt's maker code and barcode; an engraved item uses the original item's codes; a second-hand product uses the codes of the original product. Your own SKU for the finished listing is the merchant code.

What the guidance says

Section 3.5.7, "Other cases": second-hand and refurbished goods, as well as custom, personalised and print-on-demand goods, "shall comply with the new PID requirement" — the PID of the original product for second-hand goods, the PID of the underlying textile for a personalised textile, and the PID of the underlying good in a customised offer.

Practical steps for POD sellers

  1. Get the blank-product style codes and GTINs from your POD provider's catalogue (most publish them).
  2. Store them per variant (size/colour) — a variant metafield or side sheet keyed by SKU.
  3. Check the export with the free checker before November.

Questions

The POD provider ships directly to my EU customer — who supplies the identifiers?

The declarant (usually the provider's carrier) needs them on the invoice data. Confirm with your provider whether they add blank-product codes automatically; if not, you must supply them in the order data.

Is a refurbished phone 'second-hand' here?

Yes. Use the original manufacturer's model code and, if known, the original GTIN.
